World Cooee Competition
The Rock Building Society 2011 World Cooee Competition and Oz Family Fun Day will be held at Cooee Bay Sports Complex on Sunday, 7 August 2011.
Sue Cottome, Secretary of the Cooee Bay Progress and Sports Association said the Committee is thrilled to have The Rock as the major sponsor of the event.
"It makes sense to have a business like The Rock involved in a local event such as the World Cooee Competition helping us promote our beautiful area far and wide. It's great to have the support from The Rock, assisting our efforts to make the day a success and fun for all," Sue said.
A new major event will be featured on the day with a 'CQ's Got Talent' competition. The competition is expected to attract a wide variety of acts such as musicians, comedians, dancers, singers, acrobats and more. First prize for the special event is $500. Big Al Hayes, winner of Channel Nine's Hot Seat show, will compare CQ's Got Talent and novelty events on the day.
Inaugural scholarship winner announced
First year Bachelor of Accounting student, Bengamin Jones (pictured) has been awarded the inaugural John Maxwell Memorial Scholarship, established by The Rock in partnership with CQUniversity Australia.
"Winning this scholarship gave me great sense of achievement and pride, particularly knowing how well-respected John Maxwell was in the community" Benjamin said.
The annual scholarship is offered by The Rock in recognition of former Chairman, Mr Maxwell, who was tragically killed in a car accident last year. It is available to students entering their first year of a Bachelor of Accounting degree and provides support for tuition and educational expenses.
CQUniversity Australia Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said: "The Scholarship is a great example of how CQUniversity and our community work together for the betterment of our region, community and industry through education."
Flood Recovery Grants
The Rock's Community Support Program was extended earlier this year to include Flood Recovery Grants to assist organisations directly impacted by the floods, enabling us to contribute directly to affected community organisations on a one-to-one basis.
As part of the assessment process, The Rock spoke with a significant number of organisations, from schools to sporting clubs, and the disaster management group, to assess how we could best assist. The community consultation and appraisals have now been finalised, and The Rock is pleased to announce that we are allocating a total of $35,000 to 15 organisations throughout the Wide Bay and Central Queensland areas.
The following organisations are the recipients of The Rock's Flood Recovery Grants:
- Rockhampton Water Ski Club
- RSPCA CQ
- Rockhampton Fitzroy Rowing Club
- Theodore State School
- Port Curtis State School
- CQ Rugby Union
- Roosters Junior Rugby League, Theodore
- PCYC Rockhampton
- Denison State School, Emerald
- Bundaberg Netball Association
- Baralaba Golf Club
- Bundaberg Cricket Association
- Rockhampton Cricket Association

We have recently contacted each of the recipient organisations to confirm their grant. The Rock will remain in contact with these organisations and, once they determine how best to utilise this assistance, we will keep you updated.
John Maxwell Memorial Scholarship
The Rock, in partnership with CQUniversity Australia has established the John Maxwell Memorial Scholarship to honour the memory of John Maxwell and his contribution to the Rockhampton region. This scholarship recognises John's thirst for knowledge and desire to help others. The annual scholarship will be available to students entering their first year of a Bachelor of Accounting degree.
